LET’S PLAY WITH LIGHTNING

We spend the rest of the day, all night, and now well into the following day traipsing around the trail. We’ve managed to avoid five more mind fields, and this morning we scented the kids.

Lots of kids.

We’re catching up.

We crest another hill, and I let out a whoop.

Tucked between the hills is exactly what we’re looking for. Hugh actually gasps in delight, pulling the stone out of his pocket and holding it up for comparison.

We’ve reached the graveyard. The headstones, at least from what I can see at first glance, are all old. They’re weathered and worn. Some are tilted sideways or missing chunks. Several have lichen or vines obscuring bits of the writing, and a few are so old the weather has worn the writing down to where it’s not legible at all.

There are several chunks of rock or granite that are so old it’s impossible to tell whether they’re gravestones or just boulders dropped by the mountain itself.

Jackal growls, the mohawk of hair down his back puffing up even further, as we approach the twisted gates.

“I don’t like it.”

“What do you mean you don’t like it? We’ve been wandering around the terrain for days!” Hugh grumps, offended that his excitement is being forcibly dampened.

Feral scans the whole scene.

“The hyena’s right. It’s too easy. Based on what we’ve seen, there should be a solid wall of that crackling magic surrounding this place. At the very least, we should have run into a bunch of vamps and warlocks. If this is our destination, why isn’t anyone guarding it?”

Hell’s damned bells. He’s right.

I hate that he’s right.

Todd is snuffling the air.

“I can smell the kids. The scent is strong, and recent. They’ve got to be here somewhere. If they aren't, they're nearby.” The bear is one sniff away from barreling in, no matter what traps might await us.

Whether I hear crackling or not, we need to be cautious. No sense in mucking everything up now.

“Let Nadia and me check the perimeter. If it’s clear, we can enter the graveyard. How about that?”

Todd blinks.

“It’s surprisingly reasonable, coming from you.”

“Sure you wouldn’t prefer to just set the place on fire and see what happens?” Feral teases.

I roll my eye and shake my head.

“You burn a few things to the ground and no one ever lets you forget it. Come on, Nadia, we can get to work while everyone else sits on their duffs.” I wave her over, and she smirks at a ruffled Feral and Hugh as we stride past them and toward the graveyard.

At the front of the whole thing stands a set of warped, black metal gates. It’s just like B.R. said. One is leaning to the side, part of the bottom edge freed from the ground and covered in dirt. The other is twisted in on itself. They’re anchored into brick pillars. It’s clear there used to be an entire brick wall surrounding the cemetery, but it’s in shambles.

“No need to knock, I suppose,” Nadia states, voice barely above a whisper as we approach.
